thanksgiving dinner traditions going on as we speak in sausalito. a restaurant there is expecting to feed more than 1,000 people tonight and they've been doing this for more than 20 years now. our health and science editor, john fowler, here with a decidedly nontraditional food event. >> reporter: we're in avatar's in sausalito. and we're here for a 24-year tradition started by the man whose photo you can see right there. avatar was the founder of this restaurant. he decided many years ago that it would be a great idea, on the thanksgiving eve, to offer free sit-down turkey dinners to anybody who wanted to come. now, the idea here is that anyone who wants to come can do this. last year, they had over 1100 people come here and get a free sit-down meal and drink. right now, this is kumar. this is your restaurant. it's a small restaurant. how can you afford to do this? >> well, if you believe in faith and god and the community, this is how it works. and once you do it, it works. we were supposed to open at 4:00. but we did 3:00 and the people started coming. as you can see, the people are loving

've seen at least a quarter of an inch and adding to totals in san francisco and also in sausalito. we'll get in on heavy rainfall as we continue throughout tonight. top wind gusts have been from 15 to 30 miles per hour from petaluma to los gatos with a top wind speed up at 32. it will be blustery no matter where you travel tonight. take it slow. you have a lot of plans on your friday night and that's when a lot of accidents tend to happen when we rush from place to place. look at doppler scans around right now. our main focus continues to be the northern end of the peninsula from about san mateo also 92 right into san francisco. computers picking up on some heavier pockets of rain. when you see this icon here with that thunderstorm cloud and that updraft motion it basically means a heavy zone of rain where we could even get isolated flooding concerns. right now that's across california 1 here at the coastline but some heavier rainfall will continue into san francisco over the next hour and the heaviest rain right now that doppler radar continues to pick up on is headed right here towa

sausalito. anyone traveling from san francisco points northward, be prepared for the wettest area. it's been a two-sided story. we have rain building off to the south and as we head through the next two hours, that will be filtering into the south bay including san jose and all the way back across the east bay. let's get you out live. yes, it is wet. san francisco, the cloud line is also very low. some fog mixing in with that mid level cloud cover. very stormy. anyone heading into the san francisco region at the bay bridge approach will encounter lots of traffic. looks like fast track is having no problem. the time line seems a little bit confusing sometimes because we have so much activity the next 48 hours. we'll break it down for you as best we can. tonight we'll have the rain filling into the south and east bay. tomorrow morning, a few lingering showers at 6:00, 7:00, 8:00. then as we head throughout the late morning, 10:00 and 11:00, we'll have dry and even some shun shine with the clouds and then as we head throughout the evening hours, here comes the second storm we're talking about.
